Frequently Asked Questions

  • Our design process is a comprehensive, four-phase journey tailored to guide you from the earliest ideas to move-in day. We begin with Schematic Design, exploring broad concepts; refine your vision during Design Development; prepare detailed plans in Construction Documents; and support you throughout Construction Administration. From big-picture thinking to fine construction details, we’re with you every step of the way.

  • Our services include: Full-Service Architecture and Comprehensive Interior Design.

Architectural Services: As a full-service architecture firm, we offer complete services for renovation projects and new custom homes. From the initial design phase through to the final stages of construction, including the often confusing and time consuming coordination with engineers and permitting, our team is there to see the project through completion. In addition to managing the design and construction process, our architecture services also include interior design services such as interior finishes selection (countertop, tile, flooring), plumbing fixture selection, as well as lighting layout and light fixture selections. Comprehensive Interior Design: We believe architecture and interiors should speak the same language. In addition to our Architectural Services we offer comprehensive interior design services that include furniture and furnishing selection and procurement to create a cohesive and complete design for your home. • We kick off with a collaborative conversation to understand your goals, style, budget, and site conditions. From there, we begin the Schematic Design phase, where we explore layout options, massing studies, and early design ideas to help shape the foundation of your project. • Yes. In the schematic phase, we typically present two to three design options with accompanying plans and sketches. This allows us to explore creative possibilities and refine the direction based on your feedback before moving forward.

  • During this phase, we transition from concept to a more detailed design. You’ll see architectural drawings, interior and exterior elevations, finish palettes, and material studies. We’ll also start coordinating with consultants such as structural engineers and begin early interior planning—including furniture layout and lighting design.

  • Construction Documents (CDs) are the detailed technical drawings and specifications that your contractor will use to build the home. These include final floor plans, elevations, building sections, structural plans, and material specifications. This phase ensures everything is clearly communicated and build-ready.

  • Absolutely. During Construction Administration, we serve as your advocate and design guardian. We conduct regular site visits, answer contractor questions, review shop drawings, and coordinate with tradespeople to make sure the design intent is carried through. We’re also there to support you through final inspections and punch list completion. We feel this involvement is critical to seeing the design realized.

  • Every project is overseen by Risa Boyer Leritz, AIA—Principal Architect and founder. In addition to Risa’s oversight, there will be a Project Architect or Project Lead assigned specifically to your project who will lead the project from start to finish with support from our talented team of architects and designers. You’ll be in close contact with the same small team throughout your project to ensure clarity, continuity, and care.

  • We have deep experience in mid-century modern renovation and new custom homes, but our true focus is on timeless design, regional character, and sustainable solutions. Whether your project is a remodel, addition, or ground-up build, or creative commercial space we tailor the design to your site, lifestyle, and values.

  • Yes. We incorporate sustainable strategies into every project—from Passive House certification and energy-efficient systems to thoughtful siting, material selection, and natural light. Several team members are trained in high-performance building practices, and we work closely with clients to align environmental values with architectural design.

  • A Passive House is a rigorous performance-based building standard focused on energy efficiency, comfort, and indoor air quality. Passive homes use very little energy for heating and cooling thanks to a well-insulated, airtight envelope, high-performance windows, and continuous ventilation with heat recovery.

At RBA, we have team members trained and certified in Passive House design (Phius), and we often incorporate its principles—such as solar orientation, envelope detailing, and healthy material choices—into our custom home designs, even when a project isn’t formally certified. It’s part of our commitment to thoughtful, sustainable architecture.

  • We are based in Portland, Oregon and work throughout the Pacific Northwest, including Washington and Northern California. We’ve completed projects in Bend, Camas, Bellingham, Port Orford, and beyond.
